The ancient Shri Mata Sheetla Devi temple 

The ancient Shri Mata Sheetla Devi temple is situated in the heart of Gurugram City, in the National Capital Region. Legend has it that during the Mahabharata period, Guru Kripacharya’s sister Kripi was married to Guru Dronacharya.

Gurugram, being the venue of the ashram of Guru Dronacharya, where Pandavas and Kauravas received their education, Kripi was the Gurumata to them. Since , the physical and mental sufferings of human beings especially children were alleviated by her blessings, Guru Mata Kripi became famous as Sheetla Mata.

There are many other tales common in folklore eulogising the glory and grace of Shri Mata Sheetla Devi.

Devotees throng the temple all round the year but melas are held in the months of Chaitra, Vaisakh, Aashadh and the Sharad Navratras ( as per the traditional Hindu calendar) wherein, lakhs of devotees visit the temple every day.

As per popular belief various ailments like Boils, Chickenpox and Smallpox are cured with blessings of the Mata.

There is special significance of pooja by newly wed couples and for new born babies. ‘ Bal – Mundan’ of infants in the first year of the life is done at the feet of the holy mother with a prayer to bless the child with good physical and mental health all through his / her life.

Legend has it that a few centuries ago

Legend has it that a few centuries ago, Shri Mata Sheetla Devi appeared in dream to Chaudhary Singh Ram of village Gurugram and inspired him to build a temple for her. He did the same and came to be famous as “Singha Bhagat”.

Devotees also visit the ‘Choganan Mata’ alias ‘Chhoti Mata’ who is believed to be the younger sister of Sheetla Mata. The temple of Choganan Mata is situated at a distance of about one kilometre from the main gate of the Sheetla Mata Mandir.

Devotees also visit village Mubarikpur, Tigaon and Tighra for Devi Darshan. Popular belief has it that a pilgrimage to Mata Sheetla Devi temple is not complete without a visit to any one or more of these temples.

 

The Govt. of Haryana by way of the Shri Mata Sheetla Devi Shrine Board Act , 1991

The Govt. of Haryana by way of the Shri Mata Sheetla Devi Shrine Board Act , 1991 constituted a board to manage the affairs of the temple and to provide better facilities to the devotees.

The temple complex has seen much improvement in all aspects after the constitution of the board. It is the constant endeavour of the board to provide maximum facilities to the devotees.
